Maca studies

Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root plant from Peru which has been used for thousands of years to increase stamina, enhance libido and support fertility in both men and women.

Maca is an adaptogen, which means it helps the body adapt to stress and helps to return a dysfunctioning system back to its normal balance.

Maca is rich in essential minerals, especially selenium, calcium, magnesium, iron, and includes Omega fatty acids such as linolenic, palmitic and oleic acids and polysaccharides.

Maca also contains amino acids like leucine, argninie, phenylalanine, lysine, alanine etc. These amino acids are commonly included in body building supplements to increase energy and muscle growth. It is possible that these amino acids account for the male sexual benefits.

There have been some small scientific studies on the effectiveness of Maca. Two studies found that maca had a positive effect on healthy sexual function or sexual desire in healthy adults.

A 2008 study from CNS Neuroscience & Therapeutics, involved 20 people with Low mood, who were experiencing sexual problems. The results revealed that maca may also help improve libido.

One small study looked at the effect of 4 months of supplementation with maca on semen quality in nine adult men. Supplementation with maca supported healthy semen volume and sperm health. Serum levels of testosterone and estradiol were not affected.

Maca appears to a be a natural choice for both men and women and being sourced from a natural plant, it is safe when used as directed.

The Maca plant grows in the harshest and coldest parts of Peru, after being harvested it is dried naturally and can then be stored. Traditionally the Peruvians boiled the dried maca plant before using. This heating process seems to increase the activity.

To create a concentrated maca Extract it is subjected to a heated extrusion process that removes the starch from the root of Maca, as a result the human body can absorb Maca Gelatinized Powder at a higher rate than regular Maca Powder simply because ingredients such as starch are eliminated.
